Testing in the Playground talks to the agent on your canvas. Publishing makes a fixed copy of it, the Live version, that callers reach through share links and phone numbers. You can keep editing the canvas without changing what callers hear until you publish again.

Publish

  1. Open Publish: on the right rail in Advanced. In Simple, click Publish in Advanced in the Publish step, or the toolbar’s next step once it reads Publish.
  2. Read the readiness list at the top. Errors block publishing. Warnings do not, but fix the ones that matter to you.
  3. Read the sentence under the agent name. It says how calls move between your Skills, and the info icon next to it shows the routing’s name. With Smart routing, when the caller changes topic the agent moves to the connected Skill that fits; a Skill with no connections to other Skills can hand over to any Skill. With Step by step, the agent goes through your Skills one at a time, along the connections you drew. A first publish uses your workspace’s default. A republish keeps the routing of the live version, and the Playground always tests on the routing a publish would use.
  4. Click Publish this version.
  5. The success card shows a share link that works for seven days. Copy it and send it to anyone who should try the agent.
The toolbar pill now reads Published. The published version is labelled in Version history. The History tab in the Publish panel lists every publish, newest first, with its number, whether it succeeded, which one is Live, and when it happened. A failed publish shows the reason.

Going back to an earlier publish

To put an earlier publish back in front of callers, open the History tab, click Make live on its row and confirm. It goes live right away, exactly as it was published: the canvas is not touched and nothing is recompiled. That includes any key that was typed in Settings at the time, so if you have since replaced that key, restore the version and publish it instead. A new row is added, marked Made live again from #N, and phone numbers move to it. New share links play it; links you already sent keep the version they were made for. To go forward again, click Make live on the newer row. The toolbar pill compares the canvas with the version that is live, so after Make live it reads Changed since publish until the canvas matches that version again, for example after you restore it from Version history.

Publishing again

Edit the agent and the pill changes to Changed since publish. Callers still get the old version. Undo the edit, or restore the live version from Version history, and the pill reads Published again. When the new one is ready, test it as Draft in the Playground, then click Publish this version again. Publishing again keeps the routing of the live version, so fixing a typo never changes how a live agent moves between Skills. Agents first published before this setting existed keep Step by step. The Playground tests on the same routing a publish would use, so what you test is what ships. If a publish is missing a key, no share link is made until you add the key, because calls would fail. A share link keeps the version that was live when the link was made. Its card says Plays the version published with the date, or Plays the version that was live when the link was made. After publishing again, make a new link to send the new version. Existing links keep working, on the older version, until they expire, run out of calls or you revoke them. Phone numbers are different: they move to the new version automatically each time you publish.

Share

Open Share on the right rail in Advanced, or click the toolbar’s next step when it reads Share. It is enabled after the first publish.
  1. Under Link works for, choose 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days or 1 year. The default is 7 days.
  2. Under Calls allowed, keep No limit or choose how many calls the link may start. A call counts when the caller presses Start call, not when the page opens, so a chat app showing a preview of the link does not use it up.
  3. If the Persona has input variables, fill in any you want under Pre-fill details, for example an account tier. The caller cannot change a value you fill in. When the link opens, the caller is asked for every input you left empty that has no default, before Start call; required inputs must be answered.
  4. To put the agent on a website, list the sites under Embed on websites, for example example.com, www.example.com. See Embed on a website.
  5. Click Create link, then Copy link. Create another link makes a fresh one with the same settings.
If the published version records calls (the Persona’s Record calls is On, or With consent with a notice), the call page says This call is recorded before Start call, with how long recordings are kept, and shows Recording during the call. Every call from a link gets its own room, goes through the same capacity limits as other calls, and shows in Live on the Dashboard while it is happening and in Sessions afterwards. If the link is already in as many calls as it can take, or the service is busy, the caller is told to try again in a minute and the call does not count. Active links at the bottom of the panel lists every link that can still start a call, newest first, with its expiry, how many calls it has started, which inputs it pre-fills and where it can be embedded. Click Revoke, then Revoke again to confirm, to turn a link off: the next caller who opens it sees This share link was turned off, and calls already in progress are not cut off. A link leaves the list when it expires, runs out of calls or is revoked. A caller on a link that no longer works sees why: the link expired, was turned off, has been used up, or does not exist.

Embed on a website

A link with at least one site under Embed on websites gets embed code on its card and under Embed code in Active links. Paste it into each listed site, before the closing body tag:
The code adds a round button in the bottom-right corner. Clicking it opens the call in a small panel, with the same input form and Start call as the link page; clicking Close ends the call. Change the attributes to fit the site: Only the listed sites can show the panel; on any other site the browser refuses to load it. A site is https:// unless it is localhost, and *.example.com covers every subdomain. To change the list, make a new link with the new sites, paste its code, then revoke the old one. Embedded links expire and count calls like any other link, so choose 30 days or 1 year for a site and set a call limit if you want a ceiling.
Treat a share link like a key to the agent. Anyone who has it, or who reads it from a site’s embed code, can call the agent until it expires, runs out of calls or you revoke it. Do not put secrets in pre-filled values.

Draft and Live in the Playground

After the first publish, the Playground shows a Draft / Live selector. Live calls the published version, exactly as a link does. Use it to confirm what callers hear. See Playground.

Phone numbers

Phone numbers are managed in the Dashboard, not in the builder. Open Dashboard from the toolbar, or click Connect a phone number on the success card, to assign a number to a published agent. Calls to the number always reach the latest published version. Avatars are turned off on phone calls.

What publishing does not do

  • It does not change your workspace keys. A published agent uses the keys your workspace admin has set. If you typed a key in Settings before publishing, that published version also keeps the key you typed, and the Publish panel warns you before you publish. If a published agent needs a key for everyone, ask your workspace admin. See Keys.
  • It does not stop you editing. The canvas is yours. Publish when you are ready.
  • It does not delete old versions. Version history keeps them, and you can restore one and publish it, or use Make live in the History tab to bring back an earlier publish as it was.
